It refers to the heating exerted by the atmosphere on the Earth’s surface because certain atmospheric constituents (clouds, water vapor, carbon dioxide, etc.) absorb and emit infrared radiation. Heat is trapped radiatiely in the atmosphere and as a result of the greenhouse effect, the Earth’s annual mean surface temperature is higher than that of an equally reflective planet in the Earth’s orbit with no atmosphere.
